Letter: Problem from outfall source
There is no proof whatever that the bacteria in either gull or dog faeces are having a significant impact on bathing water quality. That is supported by the fact that there are gulls and dogs on most beaches many of which, like our own North beach, regularly achieve the Blue Flag excellence award for bathing water quality.
As to bacteria from human sources, Cllr Cockerill gives no credit to Yorkshire Water for spending well in excess of £50m in recent years on storage and UV disinfection to minimise the risk from the operation and impact of storm overflows. Bacteria from human sources can never be entirely eliminated as humans are on the beach and in the bathing waters from time to time.

Hide AdThe one source of pollution which is recently scientifically proved to have adverse impact on the bathing waters is the discharge from the Wheatcroft outfall.
