VILLAGERS in Lund have been disappointed for a second time after a planning application linked with funding for a new village hall was again refused.
Proposals for a five-bedroom house on North Road were refused at a meeting of the eastern area planning sub-committee of East Riding of Yorkshire Council on Monday.

The application was a resubmission, amending plans for a similar scheme which had
been refused earlier this year.

If the development went ahead the applicant, farmer Jonathan Walker, had agreed to invest £200,000 to build a new village hall and donate a field worth £60,000 to the Lund Village Hall Committee.

Chairman of the committee, David Latus, said the refusal denied young people in the village a much-needed recreation space.

He said: "The young and future generations of Lund were denied, yet again, the opportunity to have a recreation field.

"We are now back to square one with no chance of procuring a play area for the village and the prospect of propping up an ageing village hall structure into the foreseeable future."

The proposals had received strong backing from villagers with around 30 letters of support being sent to the council.

Plans submitted by the Lund Village Hall Committee for the demolition of the existing hall, built in the 1950s, to make way for a new one had already been accepted.

A spokesperson for ERYC said Mr Walker may appeal against the decision if he wishes.

The application for the dwelling, to be located on land near of 36 North Road, was refused because of the site's countryside location, the use of greenfield land and the impact of the development on the village's conservation area.

Prior to the meeting, held on Monday, planning officers recommended the application for refusal because no substantial changes had been made to the original application to address its impact on the Lund Conservation Area.

Ward councillor for the Beverley Rural area and chairman of the eastern area planning committee, Phyllis Pollard, said the decision was disappointing but it was important to find another way of providing recreation facilities for the village.

She said: "I am disappointed with the outcome but we need to find a way of supporting the village and we do want to find another way of providing new or improved village hall facilities."
