THE East Riding this week received more than £9m to help with the cost of repairing damage caused by last year's flooding.
Transport Minister Rosie Winterton visited the region yesterday to announce a further £5.042m of new Government funding for the East Riding, to repair roads and bridges damaged in the floods.

The announcement takes the total amount the Government
has given the East Riding to £15.233m, including more than £6.1m from the Department of Transport.

In addition, East Riding of Yorkshire Council this week received a further £4m in European funding for restoration and infrastructure repairs, from Community and Local Government.

The new Government funding for the East Riding was part of an extra £17m awarded for affected communities across the UK.

Ms Winterton, who is also the Minister for Yorkshire and Humber, said: "Last year's floods damaged many local roads and I know how important it is for communities to get those roads repaired.

"We have been working closely with East Riding and other councils affected since last summer to help them identify what repairs are needed.

"This £17m funding for eight local authorities is additional to the £23m announced in March and will allow councils to continue carrying out repair work.

"We are committed to continuing working with affected councils as well as providing them with support necessary to carry out repairs."

She paid tribute to the way East Riding Council had responded to the emergency, saying it had moved very quickly to deal with 'incredibly difficult circumstances.'
