Barmston Organic Farm Shop, at Elm Tree Farm, has opened its doors to the public more than a decade after owners Tony and Colleen Hunt started selling home grown organic produce at their farm gate and running a home delivery service.

The new shop will complement Mr and Mrs Hunt's established organic farming business which sees the pair delivering boxes of organic fruit and vegetables directly to the doors of residents in Driffield and Bridlington and selling their produce at farmers' markets.

Mrs Hunt, 40, said: "We had a tiny little shop before on the farm site in a different building but we didn't run it for very long because we had another baby and you just think it's very tiring having a shop and having a baby."

Mrs Hunt said the new shop is the result of popular demand from their current customer base of over 100 who have been asking the couple for a farm shop for years.

Mr and Mrs Hunt organically farm 270 acres at Barmston producing vegetables, cereals, beef and lamb and the shop will sell their produce alongside that from local producers including pork from Jim Coleman of Burton Fleming, salad from Gwen Egginton of Nafferton and spring cabbages, salad and green beans from Jenny Webb of Foston-on-the-Wolds.

The shop has been set up in a converted wagon shed thanks to a renovation grant of £5,000 from the Yorkshire Agricultural Society's Growing Routes initiative.

The couple also received a grant of £5,000 from East Riding Council's Leader+ fund to cover various set up costs including staff training and advertising.

Mrs Hunt added: "We are looking forward to it. We are just so relieved to have got our planning permission and to finally be getting everything up and runninng."

Barmston Organics farm shop is open four days a week from Wednesday to Saturday 9.30am and 6pm.
