DRIFFIELD town councillors have vowed to take the lead in the fight against the proposed re-development of the former cattle market site.
Town councillors have voted in favour of adopting a four point action plan to continue with the campaign days after East Riding of Yorkshire councillors backed the plans for a new store, shops, cafe, community hall and housing.

Councillor Steve Po
essl said: "The town council has already made clear what we think about the application and we have already made our minds up on where we stand as a town council and we should take the lead again."

The council have agreed to write to the Secretary of State requesting the application be called in and councillors have also voted in favour of leading a campaign to urge local residents, groups and organisations to follow suit.

The first of two awareness events has already been held in Driffield's Market Place where volunteers from the town council stood alongside anti-superstore campaigners urging the public to take affirmative action.

Letters were handed out to members of the public urging residents and local groups to write to the Secretary of state "requesting that she does call in the proposals so that they can be carefully reviewed and a decision made by a public enquiry."

The letter also included a summary of the story so far with regards to the planning process and an outline of the arguments against the re-development proposals.

The second awareness event is scheduled to take place in the town centre tomorrow (Saturday July 5).
