WHEELCHAIR users in Nafferton are set to benefit from new drop kerbs around the village, East Riding Council officials have revealed.
Parish councillors were told at their monthly meeting on Wednesday that work is set to be carried out to install crossing points for wheelchairs in several parts of the village.
The news came after councillors raised concerns in January this year
for the safety of disabled people in the village, who they said were forced to take to the roads because of the height of some kerbs.
Dave England, area engineer for the East Riding of Yorkshire Council's Highways department, said that new crossing points will be built in a number of areas of the village, including Ward Lea, Howe Lane and Eastlands.
He said the decisions had been taken following consultations with local wheelchair users.
The programme will include three drop kerbs in the area around the junction of Howe Lane and Eastlands.
Mr England said that the steps at the junction could not be lowered, because of the height of nearby houses.
No timescale was indicated for the works to take place, as the meeting heard that a backlog of similar cases had built up across the area because no funding was set aside for works to be carried out during the last financial year.
But Mr England said he hoped that finances would be made available during the coming year.
