Appeal for more bikers on bells ride

ENTRIES are now being taken ahead of a charity cycle ride later this month in aid of continuing efforts to provide new bells for Nafferton's parish church.
Organisers have urged would-be riders to register ahead of the event, which will take place on Saturday April 26, starting from the vicarage garden at 9am.

The ride is the latest event organised by the Nafferton Bells Committee as part of their efforts to raise money for new bells at the village's All Saints' Church.

A total of more than £6,000 has been raised since the appeal began 18 months ago.

Committee secretary Margaret Senior told the Driffield Times that nine riders had already signed up to take part.

She said it was hoped more riders will enter as the day gets closer and that she believed many had delayed signing up because of the recent, unseasonal wintry weather.

Cyclists will be able to ride either a 16 mile or 26 mile route on the day.

The shorter route travels from Nafferton towards Skerne and Hutton Cranswick before returning to the village.

The longer journey will follow a similar route, but riders will also take in a loop around Watton.

Mrs Senior said that riders will be able to register on the day, but they are asked to ensure that they are registered at the vicarage garden before setting off.

They should also inform organisers when they have come back to Nafferton.

Children aged 11 and over are welcome to take part in the ride, but must be accompanied by an adult. Youngsters should also wear all appropriate safety equipment.

The route will also be marshalled throughout, and riders are welcome to take along a picnic if they wish.

The committee members are also planning a number of other forthcoming events to raise funds for the appeal, including a craft fair at the village hall next month.

The fair will take place on Saturday May 3, between 10am and 4pm.
