PLANS to build a new playground in Nafferton have been given a major boost this week after proposals to sell the intended site were approved at a public meeting.
Around 30 residents attended the extraordinary general meeting of the village’s Recreation Club on Monday evening.

And they voted unanimously in favour of a resolution allowing trustees to sell the land next to the club’s bowling green to the Naff
erton Feoffees for it to be used as a play area.

The result was greeted with applause from the club members and residents gathered inside the clubhouse.

Parish councillor Mike Jackson, who also sits on the authority’s playground advisory group, said they were delighted by the result.

He said: “We’re looking forward to making progress with the play area and we would like to thank everybody who attended the meeting.

Recreation Club secretary Chris Kelly, who chaired the meeting, told residents that the meeting had been called in accordance with the rules laid down by the club’s constitution.

He added that a two-thirds majority was required for the resolution authorising the sale to be passed.

The result of the vote was later announced as 31 in favour with none against.

Concerns were expressed after the result was announced over the access to the proposed site from Howe Lane.

But Mr Kelly said there would be no permanent access from the Recreation Club to the play area, which he said would be a ‘separate entity’ once established.

A fence will be erected between the club and the playground, with gates providing access solely for emergency vehicles, the meeting was told.

Mr Kelly said: “We have been conscious that we can’t have any extra traffic coming down Eastlands.”

He added that the proposals had been drawn up following lengthy negotiations between the club and playground campaign groups.

“This has been going on for 18 months and hopefully we are close to fruition now,” he said.
