DRIFFIELD Mixed Bowling Club member Mike Wedgwood has reached the regional finals of the Bowls England Annual Champion of Champions knockout competition.
Michael (73) was champion of the Driffield club in 2007 which gave him entry to the 2008 champions competition. So far he has beaten bowlers from Pickering, Driffield Rec and Kirkbymoorside.

The regional finals will be held at Middlesbrough Bowling Club this Sunday, July 6, the eight finalists coming from Yorkshire (2), Durham (2), Lincolnshire, Cumbria, Lancashire and Northumberland.

Michael's quarter final opponent will be Stephen Fairish from Cumbria, who played last weekend for England in the Home Country internationals.

Another of the regional qualifiers is Billy Jackson of Lincolnshire who has made several appearances on televised indoor bowls, so while Michael does not rate his chances of making further progress highly, he is keen to seize his opportunity and put up a good performance.

The winner of the regional final will compete against the other regional winners at the national finals in Worthing on Sunday, August 10.
