DRIFFIELD CC's disappointing start to the season continued on Saturday in their home Yorkshire League match with Doncaster who plundered nearly 300 runs from an under-strength attack missing Pyrah and Patterson and then reduced the homseters to 182-8, recording an incomplete win by 111 runs.
Good solid partnerships from the top order laid the foundations for Doncaster’s big total, with Andrew Chadwick top scoring on 94 with fourteen fours and a six before Ollie Ezard got one through his defence to bowl him.

There were half centuries too from opener Graham Attenborough (62) and number three Paul Goodwin (63) as Doncaster piled on the runs, and it looked to be a thankless task for the Driffield batsmen when Jamie Kember and Mark Tennant went out to open.

Unsurprisingly there was an early blow for the Woldsmen when Kember went cheaply but Tennant and Joe Fraser dug in and moved the score past 50 before Tennant went lbw for 10. David Barber joined Fraser and the newcomer’s unfortunate trot of low scores continued as he went for another duck.

Will Norman hit a brisk 23 with four boundaries and Fraser reached the fence eight times in his 52 but it was left to the experience of Andy Inns to play a solid rearguard action that staved off a complete defeat. Inns finished unbeaten on 52 and got good support from Mark Woodcock (23) and Nick Hardgrave (9 no) as Driffield hung on to deny Doncaster full points.

A hundred by Chris Chapman made the difference for Driffield 2nds at Studley Royal where the home team inserted the Woldsmen and made a good start by dismissing both openers cheaply. But Chapman (ten fours, two sixes in his 104) found useful allies in Ben Dobson (20) and skipper Mick Drury (29) and Driffield posted a uesful-looking 212-8 in their 48 overs.

Studley had a similarly rocky start to their visitors and went to 30-3 before R Mackle (45) and C Scatchard (a quick 34) raised home hopes. But when Scatchard went, a mid-inning collapse saw Studley reduced to 103-7 and though Tom Hixon helped Mackle hold Driffield up, once the former was eighth out at 148 the innings was quickly wrapped up for 154, victory by 58 runs.

Jamie Hopper had 3-27 and Nicky Johnson 3-26.

Driffield 3rds are enjoying their first season in the York Senior League, although their placing in Division 5a looks to be a little on the low side, to judge from the way they are rolling over the opposition.

On Saturday they again took maximum points as they beat Huntington by eight wickets. Huntington made 140 for 9 with I Lenney top scoring on 52 and skipper Rob Woodcock taking 4-39. Chief batting honours went to young Dan Broumpton who followed up his recent hundred for East Yorkshire in the Joe Lumb U17s competition by crashing an unbeaten 84 as Driffield cruised home by seven wickets.

Driffield 4ths head the Division One East Yorkshire Alliance table along with Hull & YPI after both sides kept their 100 per cent records.
